Time and again, I’ve been asked what treasures my dream garage might hold. I tend to avoid answering because it’s just too hard to pinpoint a handful of favorites. As with music, my thoroughly mutable tastes change based on environment, mood, and circumstance. That said, there are a few precious vehicles that, like James Taylor or some retro Snoop Dogg, will always get my engine revved.
Observe the 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB* Spyder California. Why I’d want one:
- Conceived by Luigi Chinetti, a famous Italian-American race car driver in the 1930s - 1950s, the Ferrari 250 GT Spyder California is an iconic masterpiece and a true work of craftsmanship and art.
- With its 280 horsepower V-12 engine, the 250 GT Spyder Calfiornia is a speedster and hearkens to a time when superior racing capability and attractive vehicular architecture could be found within the confines of a single automobile.
- Just 51 of the LWB version were made, making this car extremely precious. At auction, these cars have achieved nearly $4.5 million.
*Note: LWB = long wheel-base
