March 4, 2009Seriously…?

(via ecofriend.org)

You’re wondering, “what are those ridiculous looking things that resemble iMacs of the late 1990s?” Glad you asked…they’re eco-friendly concept cars designed by Daniel Scotland for French car company, Peugeot. Powered by a single lithium battery and maneuvered by joystick, the two-wheeler egg car is envisioned as the future of urban transport. I don’t know how much one of these things might cost, but I imagine the money I squandered on cabs during the 2008 calendar year would probably come close to covering it should the concept be made a reality. I suppose finding parking for the eco egg would be pretty easy and using one to get around Manhattan, for instance, doesn’t seem like such a bad idea (think of the money that could be saved on cab fare and the aggravation that could be spared by reduced subway use) if one can swallow one’s pride and resign to riding in a neon egg / glorified golf-cart. Unless its brand of kitsch comes into vogue, hip urbanites might have a tough time embracing the eco-egg, but if the fervor for “green” persists, perhaps I will be proven wrong. For me, I just don’t know if I would ever be able to get the image of Steve Urkel’s car out of my head: 1960 BMW Isetta.
