Now THAT’s a good looking car…
What is it? It’s the beautiful new coupe that is poised to carry the Alfa Romeo brand back to the US by the power of its 450-hp 4.7-liter V8 (Ferrari-based) engine. Six years after appearing in concept form at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is road ready. The exterior architecture (made entirely of carbonfiber) is exemplary of the finest Italian design. This is the tradition that has yielded artistic marvels ranging from the Colosseum to theBernini’s Rape of Proserpine to the Ferrari 250 TR. Evidently the engine’s roar is enough elicit goose bumps from those with a need for speed (0-60 in 4.2 seconds? ”check, please.”). Inside the cabin, red leather seats and accents send the car enthusiast’s mercury rising, though liberal use of silver plastic components detracts from the cabin’s overall aesthetic (for me, at least). No matter, the 8C is ridiculous (the good kind) and just 85 of them will make their way across the Atlantic at a cost of more than $230,000 per auto. Where will they land? I imagine the small batch of Italian gems will turn up in Coastal cities…keep your eye out if you find yourself in any of the following: Palm Beach, Miami, Manhattan, the Hamptons, San Francisco, LA, Orange County, San Diego…you know the drill.
